Our work in civic education began in 1982 with Capitol Focus, our flagship program which still convenes today. Since then, through a variety of programs, the California Center for Civic Participation has introduced thousands of young people to the lively world of state politics.
We offer youth first-hand exposure to the issues, processes, and personalities of state government. Lawmakers, lobbyists, journalists, members of the justice system and many other professionals present a wide variety of perspectives, encouraging debate. By giving young people an in-depth, exciting experience in politics, our programs foster enthusiasm for participation in the democratic process.
We are committed to a non-partisan point of view and do not take or suggest positions on issues. Instead, we encourage critical, independent thinking by providing the facts and tools necessary to make informed decisions. Because of this approach, our programs enjoy long-standing bipartisan support from top elected officials and other proponents. We draw strength from diversity in every way, and we welcome youth from all academic backgrounds.
Goals for our civic education programs include:
- Inspire enthusiasm for the democratic ideals and processes
- Enhance analytical and critical thinking skills
- Provide opportunities for students to form and voice opinions
- Develop positive relations among youth from diverse backgrounds and aptitudes
We aim to foster life-long enthusiasm for the democratic process and to give our participants an opportunity to visualize their own possibilities in this world.
