Program Intern

Brief Description of Internship
All interns will serve as project assistants for the California Center for Civic Participation. The California Center for Civic Participation is a nonprofit, nonpartisan political awareness organization that educates middle and high school students about the importance of informed participation in the democratic process. We also strive to educate citizens as a whole about current statewide policy issues and the legislative process. Participants of our programs not only gain a greater understanding of the political process, they are also provided access to some of the key players in our state decision making body. California Center interns are a valuable part of making this opportunity possible for students and citizens across the state of California.

Specific Duties Include (but are not limited to)
1) Working with state legislative district offices to identify youth to attend our 2005 California Perspectives (a Special Election related program) and Winter 2006 conferences,
2) Conducting research and writing briefs on current election issues and policy proposals,
3) Assisting with development of text and designs for marketing materials,
4) Assisting with program logistics, public relations, material preparation, and speaker scheduling.

Successful candidates will experience extensive direct contact with offices of prominent government professionals, including legislators, consultants, lobbyists, and journalists. Spring interns will have the opportunity to assist in preparation, as well as attend, the prestigious California Roast.

Special Skills, Interests, or Preferred Qualifications
We are looking for students with an interest in and enthusiasm for California state government and politics. Exceptional writing, telephone, and word processing skills are required. The willingness to improve these skills is a plus. A desire to work with high school students and stimulate their interest in current issues, as well as the democratic process, will lend to a successful and enjoyable experience for any interested candidate. Students must have the ability to work independently, as well as in a group. Knowledge of state and local government and legislative processes is not necessary, but encouraged. Although a minimum of 10 hours is encouraged in order for interns to get the most out of their internship, it is not necessarily required. Final selection will be based on the candidate's qualifications. Students of all areas of study are welcome to apply.

Benefits of the California Center Internship
An excellent opportunity to get involved, learn about issues, and meet the personalities of state politics. The California Center offers a stipend of $100 per month and depending on the number of qualified candidates, parking is included. Additional compensation is offered for those interns who desire to participate as instructors during the conferences. This compensation is DOE. Hours are flexible. We work around your busy class schedule! Dress is casual, only a few exceptions throughout the year. Course credits may be available through the internship department of your university. See the internship coordinator at your school regarding specific requirements.
