Program
Instructor
The California Center is seeking up to 16 individuals
to serve as Program Instructors (Workshop Leaders) during our upcoming
political awareness conferences for statewide high school and eighth-grade
students. Compensation starts at $150 and increases depending on
experience and the number of programs an individual has completed.
Two meals per day, lodging and resume
references will also be provided for those selected. More than one
hundred fifty students from local universities, law schools, and
political offices have served as interns and instructors during
previous programs. Their feedback indicates that they both enjoyed
and were enriched by the experience. This is a great opportunity
for all students who wish to enhance their resume, gain valuable
work experience, and be a part of a great organization that serves
thousands of youth throughout the state.
Program Description
Approximately one hundred students from communities
statewide will arrive in Sacramento on the first day of each conference
to begin their experience as Capitol Focus participants. In addition
to registration, orientation, and opening day activities, participants
will be introduced to controversial statewide issues, such as trying
youth as adults, assisted suicide, firearm regulations, and other
current legislative proposals being considered by our state legislators.
For the following two days, participants will move throughout the
capitol city for a lively series of seminars, workshops, appointments,
and debates focusing on various areas of public policy. Through
their encounters with legislators, executive branch officials, lobbyists,
journalists, and media representatives, students will develop the
confidence, knowledge, and critical thinking skills necessary for
effective participation in the democratic system. Additional subject
areas include criminal justice, education, business, the environment,
law, morality, and juvenile crime.
Program Instructor Duties
Each person selected to serve as a Capitol
Focus Program Instructor will be assigned a "team" or
workshop group of 12-20 students. The instructor will facilitate
daily workshops, serve as a friend and counselor to the students,
greet and introduce speakers, moderate debates, and assist the Program
Director with group activities, logistics, and briefings. IMPORTANT
NOTE: You must be able to commit to the duration of the entire
program from beginning to end, including overnight. All staff will
stay at the Clarion Hotel in Sacramento. ALL AREAS OF STUDY WELCOME
TO APPLY!
Qualifications
Must have the ability and desire to relate to young people. An interest
in fueling enthusiasm for politics is a plus. A general familiarity
with the issues and institutions of California government and politics
is very helpful. The willingness to commit up to three full days
and two evenings to the program from Sunday-Tuesday a must. (A mandatory
evening training session the Thursday evening prior to the program
is also required.)
